Sustaining Health Site Just another WSUWP Platform – Global site

Uncompromising pursuit of a healthier world

Longtime expertise in the academic disciplines focused on human and animal health is one of the hallmarks of the WSU enterprise. As a result, the University is ideally positioned to advance health and wellbeing issues worldwide.

As a member of the Washington Global Health Alliance and through partnerships with the University of Washington and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, WSU is collaborating with other organizations at home and abroad to improve the lives of people and the animals on which we depend for healthy and productive lives.

Healthy communities contribute to a healthy economy. Since it founding in 1890, WSU has advanced scientific understanding of the intricate links between plants, animals, and human health in communities ranging from rural Washington to southern Africa.

Among the areas of related research in which the University is engaged:

Behavioral health and performance

WSU scientists are designing novel strategies for treating addictions, unraveling the mysteries of sleep and the effects of reduced and displaced sleep on cognitive performance and health, developing treatment methods for chronic pain, and training teachers to address complex trauma in children to maximize their chances for success in school and in life.

Novel therapeutic strategies

Other researchers are exploring which exercise and nutrition strategies work best to promote health, developing new drug delivery technologies, determining the efficacy of novel pharmaceutical and immunotherapeutic treatments for addiction disorders, and designing strategies to integrate behavioral and pharmacological approaches to treat a variety of conditions.

Delivery of healthcare to underserved populations

Faculty are designing, implementing, and evaluating healthcare delivery models for underserved populations, including low-income families, residents of rural areas, and older adults.

Disease onset and progression

University scientists are striving to answer questions about the interactions between sleep loss, obesity, and metabolism, and investigating the cellular and molecular mechanisms that play a key role in the development of cancer, among other diseases.

Reproductive biology

The Center for Reproductive Biology, a WSU-led consortium of more than 100 university scientists and private industry investigators in the Pacific Northwest, explores a number of topics with a direct bearing on human health, including the genomics of reproduction, nutrition and reproduction, ovary and testis biology, and reproductive cancer, medicine, and toxicology.
